Confirmed later in the search: Kidd and Pinckney had both been training in the South China Sea. Kidd took the southwestern Gulf of Thailand sector; Pinckney the northeast. Pre-search tracks remain unpublished.
Stars and Stripes and Defense Media Network, 10–11 March 2014: both destroyers were on a training mission in the South China Sea when dispatched. Malaysian authorities assigned search sectors. Public language is post-loss search. Combat-system logs, helicopter tracks and whether either ship’s sensors were radiating at 17:21–18:22 UTC on 7 March are still open.
