The 2018 safety report says the turn-back likely came from manual inputs. It does not name who was flying after IGARI. Capt. John Cox, among others, reads the same radar as a high-likelihood captain act. Simulator files exist; the report did not treat them as a plan.
Sources
- Forclaim-manual-inputsThe diversion likely resulted from manual inputs
Official 2018 consensus. Who made the inputs is not identified. Mechanical-only stories are a poor fit for a coherent reverse course plus comms dropout.
- Forevi-military-radarMalaysian military primary-radar track
Primary radar paints a left turn off the Beijing airway, a crossing of the peninsula, and a track up the Strait of Malacca until 18:22 UTC. Altitude/speed blip-to-blip in the file are noisier than 777 performance.
- Forevt-turn-backTurn back across the Malay Peninsula
Primary radar shows a left turn off the Beijing airway, a crossing of Malaysia, and a track toward the Andaman Sea. The official report calls this diversion likely the result of manual inputs.
- Forevi-simulatorCaptain’s home flight-simulator files
Files exist. A restored route into the southern Indian Ocean has been published. The 2018 report did not treat this as a reconstructed plan.
- Forclaim-comms-manualCommunications were more likely switched off or unpowered than randomly failed
ACARS, transponder and VHF drop together near IGARI. The report favours manual off / power interrupt, without proving intent.
- Forclaim-last-voice-captainThe last radio call is attributed to the captain
Official voice identification. Calm, protocol-correct handover two minutes before transponder loss.
- Forclaim-cox-captainCapt. John Cox: preponderance is a deliberate act, high likelihood the captain
June 2026 interview. FIR-boundary dropout, reverse course, ocean leg — too many coincidences for a random failure, in his reading. Not a court finding and not the 2018 report’s wording.
- Forclaim-transponder-sequenceTransponder dropped in two steps, not as a single failure
Mentour Pilot and others: Mode S / TA-RA selected off seconds after IGARI; the remaining secondary-radar symbol gone ~37 seconds later; then the left turn. A total electrical failure would have blanked every emitter at once.
- Againstthy-third-partyThird-party intervention
The Annex 13 team wrote that intervention by a third party cannot be excluded. Remote hijack as implemented technology on commercial 777s was ruled out.
- Againstthy-remoteExternal / uninterruptible autopilot on 9M-MRO
Boeing US7142971B2 and Cubic US6641087B1 describe remote engagement, disconnected cockpit controls, dedicated links. No maintenance/mod/certification record currently in this archive places that architecture on 9M-MRO.
- Againstthy-mechanicalMechanical / cargo-fire failure
A running systems failure that also produces a coherent reverse course and six more hours of SATCOM is a poor fit. Lithium-battery cargo was reviewed and not adopted as cause.
- Againstthy-isr-architectureBroader ISR collection architecture (not “MH370 was Orion”)
If alleged video were authentic, a test/collection architecture could involve a subject aircraft plus airborne/space collectors, C2 links, sensor fusion and PED. Programme overlap with MAGIC/Orion/Gorgon Stare/Blue Devil is documented. The bridge to MH370 is not.
- Relatedq-who-flewWho was flying after IGARI?
Official report: cannot establish if anyone other than the two pilots was at the controls. Manual inputs likely; actor unknown.
- Relatedclaim-simulatorHome-simulator coordinates are not an official finding of planning
Files exist. Commentators map a southern route. The 2018 report did not convert that into premeditation.
- Relatedper-zaharieZaharie Ahmad Shah
Last attributed radio call: “Good night Malaysian three seven zero.” Home simulator files exist; the 2018 report did not treat them as a reconstructed plan. Who was flying after IGARI is open.
- Relatedper-fariqFariq Abdul Hamid
Not heard on the last ATC handover. His mobile registered with a Penang tower at 17:52:27 UTC, corroborating the westbound primary-radar track. About 2,763 hours; this was a 777 training sector.
- Relatedthy-pilotFlight-crew diversion
The 2018 report says the turn-back likely resulted from manual inputs. It does not identify a crew member as perpetrator and did not treat the home simulator as a plan.
- Relatedevi-no-eltNo 406 MHz ELT detection
No satellite or ground station reported a 406 MHz distress burst from 9M-MRO. Compatible with a high-energy impact, a powered-off ELT, or a failure to trigger.
- Relatedper-coxCapt. John Cox
June 2026: preponderance of the evidence is a deliberate act, high likelihood the captain. Reads FIR-boundary timing and the reverse course as too coordinated for a random failure.

Type-rated 737 captain’s reconstruction from the 2018 report, Inmarsat BTO/BFO, and the Blelly–Marchand end-of-flight paper. Argues the transponder was selected off in two steps, not failed as a unit. Closes with a WSPR lead and a request to restart the search.
