Handshake 2
19:41:00 UTC
Ground-initiated hourly handshake. The aircraft remains a live Inmarsat terminal, southbound on the Indian Ocean corridor in later reconstructions.
The Perth ground station initiated a routine handshake at 19:41:00 UTC. Combined with later BFO sign, this and subsequent pings are consistent with a long southern track, not a northern one. Ashton, Dickinson, and others at Inmarsat published the method by which BFO discriminates north vs south in the Journal of Navigation.
