The Remarkable Blaine Gibson
Jeff Wise · Finding MH370 S1E21 · 18 November 2024 · 52:58
Wise’s case against treating Gibson’s beach finds as ordinary luck: “No Step” in 20 minutes on a Mozambique sandbar; a Madagascar piece appearing between two passes of a TV crew; village objects later identified as 777 interior.
Blaine Alan Gibson is a confirmed finder in the Malaysian debris tables. Item-class identifications (almost certain / highly likely) sit on several of his pieces, including the Mozambique flap-track fairing with MAS stencil 676EB. Wise’s episode does not deny that some pieces are 777 parts. It argues the discovery process is statistically implausible and, in places, internally inconsistent with Gibson’s own earlier tellings (beach-comb versus villagers bringing objects). That is a chain-of-custody argument, not a finding that the flaperon itself is fake — the Réunion flaperon was recovered by locals, examined by DGA-TA, and is serial-confirmed. Hold both: Gibson added pieces to the western-Indian-Ocean field; the circumstances of some finds remain a live dispute inside the independent community.
